Research in St Petersburg archive

Dear researchers

Do you have ancestors from St Petersburg or you know someone who does? Are you thinking of doing the research in St Petersburg archive? St Petersburg archive is organizing a campaign “People’s Archive: Preserving the past – looking into the future.”

The archivists and historians are looking for descendants who have family diaries, important documents and any other records of people who lived in St Petersburg.  The experts propose to analyze them for free, determine the value and guarantee the storage in their archive.  The most important aspect of this campaign is that the archivists will help to research your family tree.

St Petersburg archive is one of Russian archives which has the electronic database on its website.  Svetlana Shtukova, chairman of St. Petersburg Archive’s Committee, told Smart News on 11 March 2014 to expect more.

“This is a pilot project.  There is no such project in Russia yet. Remote access to documents will be available on our website starting this semester. At first only metrical books will be available, but in the future the archive will expand the list of documents”.

Will keep you posted.
