This Russian archive is great if your ancestor was a Russian diplomat or a person somehow related to Russia’s foreign relations.

Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire (AVPRI)/Архив внешней политики Российской империи / provides storage of documents on foreign policy from 1720 to 1917, at the same time being the depositary of international treaties of the Russian Empire.

The funds include diplomatic documents, mainly in the original, including reports addressed to “Majesty”, covers matters of foreign policy, instructions to diplomatic and consular representatives of the Foreign Ministry, reports of international conferences with the participation of Russia, correspondence, annual reports of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, etc. The Archive has a collection of documentary materials of prominent Russian diplomats, statesmen and public figures, military leaders, scientists, writers, as well as a collection of microfilms, obtained in the framework of international exchange.
